Anahata Chakra - Meditation and Feeling of Love and Loss

I wrote this last year, but being a full-time mum, with no time for internet and leaving the whole blogging community to my children, I never fully published it....

Leo, my beautiful, black 19-year-old cat died in February this year. We buried him in the garden and planted a rose on his grave, which is now known as Leo's rose. He was part of the family – he was the family. He was my first baby – I had no children when my sister and I adopted him and his brother Tiger at only three weeks old. I still miss him. My youngest keeps asking "Where's Leo?" "Has he got food?"
It's difficult to explain to a two-year old the concept of death - she wouldn't understand even if I tried. At the same time, I'm not sure I can explain it to myself either! Yoga prepares us for death – after all, Savasana is a "corpse” pose! Yet I'm still learning to cope with the loss of a loved one - a grandparent, a friend, a pet or death in general!
Meditating on Heart Chakra can awaken the feelings of love, belonging, sadness, happiness and gratitude. It is a very therapeutic, meditative practice, it heals both your mind and the body. I find the Heart meditation very emotional and full. I often get reconnected to those that are no longer with me (either in body or soul) and I feel very emotional. But often content. It’s like after listening to a beautiful music piece or going dancing! (Incidentally, while I’m writing this, I am interrupted to join my two-year-old in dancing to Can’t Stop this Feeling by Justin Timberlake!)

Anahata Chakra meditation is a beautiful practice. The heart centre is where we experience being connected with the body and the less tangible energetic field. What is mostly evident from this practice is that we start seeing ourselves in a relationship with others and we start living in a heart-cantered existence. We are inextricably bound to everything around us. We love without expectations. And we learn to show gratitude without expectations. Love doesn’t involve bargaining and is spiritual and free of expectations – this is what should happen when Anahata is awakened.
I feel more connected to my family, my past, my present. My future is becoming a bit clearer. I have always seen love in everything and have generally been positive, the heart meditation strengthens those feelings. I have always seen good in people and have never hated anyone. Kundalini Tantra (Swami Saraswati, Bihar School of Yoga) describes the new way of thinking in relation to Anahata awakening, and changing the entire way of thinking. “You must become extremely optimistic and positive, always full of hope. You must never dwell in the negativity of the mind." He also says: “The whole world is in me or I am in everyone” – there is a need to develop this universal sort of attitude, and perhaps if we manage to teach more people to think the same way the world will become a better place.
Which makes me think – I am a mother and have no or minimum expectations from my children, my love is unconditional and totally unselfish. Anahata meditation practice has made me see and find love in everything and as a source of faith for others; it has made me find gratitude in myself and offer the same to all the people around me and those that are no longer alive but will always be present in my life. I want this feeling to carry on and I want my children to feel the same through me. I want to offer the same feeling of thankfulness and love, being truthful and focused, no harmful intentions and no egoistic feelings and be able to pass this knowledge on. Perhaps, to find inner peace, perhaps to make the world a better place. Perhaps just to enjoy! And be within My Heart!
“In meditation we find peace, in meditation on god(s) people find happiness and faith” (The Bhagavad Gita). So, although Anahata Chakra meditation helps you deal with feelings of loss and letting go, meditation in general is very helpful, it steadies our mind and calms the soul. It is the meditation centred on us – the Self. It will allow the right flow of energy within our bodies and through little effort, patience and repeated practice, the mind will become stilled in the self.  The mind will become calm and will reach a different level of perception; the body will become balanced and enjoy a natural rhythm and energy.
